The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “When a human being dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
The value of ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) lies in the fact that its reward is not limited to a person’s lifetime — it remains a continuous stream of goodness that nourishes others and preserves their dignity long after one’s passing.
Inspired by this profound humanitarian concept, Tkiyet Um Ali developed its vision of ongoing charity into the “Sustainability–Developmental Ongoing Charity Program,” transforming donations into long-term investments that empower vulnerable families and strengthen their food security.
In this article, we explore this pioneering initiative that embodies the true meaning of continuous giving and sustainable development at the same time.
What Is the Sustainability–Developmental Ongoing Charity Program?
The Sustainability Program–Developmental Ongoing Charity is a pioneering national initiative launched by Tkiyet Um Ali to redefine charitable giving as a tool for sustainable development rather than temporary assistance. The program aims to empower the most vulnerable Jordanian families by establishing and managing income-generating projects that help beneficiaries move from being aid recipients to self-reliant producers capable of supporting themselves and their families.
The program is implemented in partnership between Tkiyet Um Ali and Dar Abu Abdullah Association over a five-year period. Individuals, companies, and institutions can contribute by purchasing a donation share worth 50 Jordanian dinars, turning their contributions into a tangible, lasting impact that supports developmental projects and promotes social and economic stability for families in need.
What Is the Goal of the Sustainability–Developmental Ongoing Charity Program?
The program aims to transform donations from short-term aid into sustainable investments that create lasting economic and social impact. It empowers vulnerable Jordanian families to achieve financial independence by channeling ongoing charity funds into productive projects that generate steady income and long-term benefits.
The program also supports national priorities, including promoting productivity, strengthening food security through hydroponic farming and local production, addressing climate change with innovative agriculture systems that conserve water and energy, and advancing the social economy by empowering women and youth through income-generating projects.
Furthermore, the Dar Abu Abdullah Association manages and invests donations in carefully designed projects over a five-year period, providing technical and administrative support to ensure sustainability. Afterward, beneficiaries manage their projects independently, achieving lasting self-reliance; a true model of developmental ongoing charity that merges social impact with economic growth in line with Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision.
How the Program Works
The program operates through a clear model designed to ensure that donations create a tangible economic and social impact for beneficiary families. It begins with the donation stage, where contributors can participate by purchasing one or more ongoing charity shares, each valued at 50 Jordanian dinars, with no deductions for administrative expenses. This ensures that 100% of the donation is directed towards supporting developmental projects.
The collected funds are then invested in sustainable projects across two main pillars:
Hydroponic Farming Projects
This pillar focuses on establishing climate-smart greenhouses equipped with modern irrigation systems that reduce water consumption and lower operational costs. It also includes providing agricultural inputs, innovative climate solutions, maintenance for existing infrastructure, and essential equipment to ensure project sustainability.
Since 2021, the program has produced over 100 tons of crops through more than 100 greenhouses managed by the Dar Abu Abdullah Association, in addition to opening export markets, which further strengthen the sustainability of this efficient and empowering agricultural model.
Sewing and Home Production Projects
This pillar aims to empower women by establishing modern workshops equipped with sewing machines and production tools, enabling them to create high-quality products and connect with local and international markets. It also involves upgrading and expanding existing projects by purchasing new machinery and adding equipment that supports long-term sustainability.
Since 2021, the sewing program, managed by the Dar Abu Abdullah Association, has empowered over 600 women to produce approximately two million pieces, generating more than 650,000 Jordanian dinars in income—a clear reflection of this model’s success in achieving social and economic empowerment.
What Is the Expected Impact of the Program?
By redefining the concept of ongoing charity to encompass both economic and developmental dimensions, the Sustainability–Developmental Ongoing Charity Program is expected to generate a tangible and multidimensional impact throughout its implementation period.
The program will enhance income sources for beneficiary families, enabling them to achieve financial independence through productive projects that generate stable income and ensure a decent standard of living. It will also enhance the participation of women and youth in the local economy by integrating them into productive initiatives that build their capacities and create real opportunities for growth. Furthermore, the program aims to develop a pioneering national model of developmental ongoing charity that can be replicated and expanded across different governorates. Ultimately, it will create new local job opportunities and improve resource efficiency through a circular economy approach that minimizes waste and maximizes the use of available resources.
What Is the Religious and Social Impact of the Program?
Rooted in the Islamic principle of sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity), the program fulfills a spiritual and religious dimension, allowing donors to give in a way that continues to generate reward and impact even after the act of donation itself has ended.
From a social perspective, the program promotes self-reliance and human dignity by empowering individuals to work and produce rather than remain dependent on assistance. To ensure sustainability, Tkiyet Um Ali oversees and monitors the projects in the field, providing technical and administrative support to beneficiaries during and after implementation. The organization also ensures that 100% of donations go directly to the projects, with no deductions for administrative costs or zakat, maintaining full transparency and providing the complete impact reaches those in need.
